Síle O'Brien
Senior Outdoor Recreation Specialist
16 years of experience designing and guiding accessible hiking trails across the Burren. Síle's work combines geological knowledge with genuine care for older adults, proving that age isn't a barrier to experiencing Ireland's most distinctive landscapes.
The Journey
From passion to purpose
Síle's path into senior outdoor recreation wasn't planned — it emerged from genuine observation. Back in 2008, she was managing walking programmes at the Ennis Active Ageing Centre when she noticed something striking: older adults wanted to explore the Burren, but most trail guides didn't understand their needs. Rest points weren't marked. Terrain difficulty was vague. Information was scattered.
That gap bothered her. After completing her degree in Environmental Studies at University College Cork, she made a decision. Instead of pursuing a conventional career path, she volunteered as a trail guide and started documenting routes herself — walking them with older groups, listening to their feedback, learning what actually worked.
Over the past decade, she's documented over 40 walking routes across the Burren's limestone plateau. Each one includes terrain details, rest points, water access, and geological context. She's trained more than 200 tour guides in senior-safe outdoor practices. Three published guides bear her name. But the work she's most proud of isn't in print — it's the feedback from hikers who said, "I thought I couldn't do this anymore. You proved me wrong."
What drives her now is the same thing that drove her in 2008: the conviction that landscapes shouldn't be off-limits based on age. With the right trail, proper information, and thoughtful planning, anyone can experience what makes the Burren special.
Areas of Expertise
What 16 years of work has taught her
Burren Geology & Landscape
Deep knowledge of karst topography, limestone formations, and the unique geological story of County Clare's plateau. She doesn't just guide people through the landscape — she helps them understand it.
Senior-Focused Trail Design
Specialises in creating accessible routes that account for mobility variations, pacing needs, and rest requirements. She's worked with groups from age 65 to 88, and she designs trails accordingly.
Safety & Risk Management
Trained in outdoor first aid, terrain assessment, and group management. She's developed protocols for hydration, rest intervals, and weather adaptations — all based on real experience with older walkers.
Guide Training & Documentation
Has trained over 200 guides in senior-safe outdoor practices. Created three published guides on Burren trails, plus extensive route documentation used by walking groups across Ireland.

Philosophy & Approach
Age Isn't a Limitation
Síle doesn't believe in telling older adults what they can't do. Instead, she focuses on what they can do — and how to do it safely. The right trail, proper pacing, and good information change everything. She's seen people in their 70s and 80s discover parts of the Burren they thought were closed to them.
Details Matter
A vague description of "moderate difficulty" isn't helpful. She documents terrain precisely — loose stones, steep sections, exposed areas. She marks rest points, water access, and escape routes. This specificity builds confidence. When hikers know exactly what they're facing, they can make informed decisions.
Geology is the Story
The Burren's limestone plateau isn't just a backdrop — it's the reason people come. Síle weaves geological context into every guide. Understanding why the landscape looks the way it does transforms a walk into an experience. People don't just hike; they learn.
Community First
She's trained over 200 guides because she believes knowledge should spread. Better guides mean better experiences for more people. She collaborates with local landowners, tourism boards, and walking groups. This work isn't about individual recognition — it's about making the Burren accessible to everyone.
